The kids and I went out to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife’s “Free Fishing Day” down in Cottage Grove on Saturday. It was a cool, cloudy day with many people out fishing. Both Nora and Jonah fished for a couple of hours with Jonah finally catching a nice little Rainbow trout – his first ever catch.

Sean had a conference in Virginia Beach this past weekend, so Jonah and I went along for a fun change of scenery. (And because we would miss Sean for four days.) Our hotel was right on the beach, and there was one day that it wasn’t totally freezing and windy that we got to walk around and play for a bit.
Pointing at a big boat
Jonah refused to say ‘sand’. He thought it was very funny to call it ‘dirt’.
He loved my truck drawings in the sand. Even a bulldozer!
Stalking the seagulls
We went to the Norfolk Zoo and saw a lot of animals that Jonah hadn’t ever seen for real before. He really liked the monkeys and turtles, and practiced some new animal words.
We enjoyed some swim time in the hotel pool.
The next day we went to the Chesapeake Aquarium. By far, Jonah’s favorite was the sea turtle – ‘more big turtle!’ He also started saying ‘shark’, ‘snake’, seahorse’, ‘lobster’, ‘crab’, and ‘ray’ while we were there.
On to the sharks!
Jonah’s checking out the ‘big turtle’ sculpture near our hotel.
But it was way too cold to stay outside long, so we went to the Starbucks nearby so I could get a warm drink. I got some hot chocolate, thinking that Jonah could enjoy a little treat. He was NOT a fan. At all. Here are a few cute shots of him hanging out by the window there (where he could watch the traffic, of course).
And finally, back at the hotel, Jonah sat in the big chair to look at his favorite page in his favorite book – oh my goodness! – there’s a garbage truck!!
Here’s Jonah chasing the cats around, kind of squeal-babbling at them, making the ‘cat’ sign, and trying to pet them. The orange one never wanted to stick around long when Jonah was in the area, but the gray one was usually at least somewhat interested in seeing what this little guy was up to. Oh, and you’ll see Jonah ‘running’. Hilarious.

It was sooooo nice to be outdoors in Charleston where it was in the upper 60s. We went to the Atlantic Ocean with Jonah for the first time. He was excited to point out all the birds and run around on the sand.
He got to hold some crab shells and seashells.
And Mom drew a truck in the sand!!!
Then Jonah was a little worn out, so he got a ride in the carrier.
The next day, it was off to the aquarium. Jonah really gets excited about the little fish he sees at Petsmart, so we were pretty sure he’d love this trip. He was doing a lot of his ‘big’ and ‘fish’ signs, and has also pretty much figured out how to use the word ‘Wow!’ at appropriate times, so it was great fun to watch him see all these creatures.
Checking out the little alligators
That’s a big tooth!

Finding the “green green” frog
Thanks, Aunt Jeanne and Uncle Jeremy!! This was a great trip!!!
Until this trip, Jonah often called cats ‘dogs’, but we don’t think he’ll be confused any longer. He had a great time chasing around Tisbe and Dora while squealing and making the sign for ‘cat’. We’re pretty sure the cats were not as fond of him as he was of them, but Jonah did manage to get a few gentle pats in.
Uncle Jeremy likes to get the cats all worked up chasing a laser pointer, and Jonah was just as easily entertained by the mysterious red light. He was going after it right along with the kitties.
Time for a rest
