Trains!

While we were in Pennsylvania, we took a day trip to the Railroad Museum in Strasburg. It was a big hit with both of the kids, because Jonah totally loves trains right now, and Nora loves whatever Jonah loves. The museum was an enormous space with dozens of huge engines and train cars to check out. Jonah was in awe.

Nora climbed on every single bench in sight.

The museum even had some fun interactive spaces for kids, and they both loved shoveling coal into the firebox.

Then we got to ride on a real steam-powered engine through the Lancaster countryside. This was a real highlight of the trip for Jonah. For days, he would randomly say, “I really liked going for that train ride!”

Then Jonah and Grandpa went to go watch the engine couple on to the passenger cars to take the next group of people for a ride.

Jonah paid very close attention.

And we couldn’t have a train day without Thomas now, could we? ;)

The kids had such a great time. Here’s proof.

Meeting Phoebe

Last weekend, we took a trip up to Seattle to see Lisa, Jonathan, and Phoebe. It was the first time the cousins got to meet each other. Nora looooved Phoebe, or as she called her, “Wheee-beeee.” Even now a week later, she keeps asking to see pictures of Wheebee on the computer. Jonah was more interested in observing Phoebe from a distance and playing imaginary baseball with Sean. They even went to see the Phillies and Mariners play while we were there, but I’ll let Sean do a guest post on that one. ;)

Here are a few cute pictures of the kids together.

End of May

We’ve had a busy month around here with lots of visitors and projects. Over Memorial Day weekend, Grandma and Grandpa came to visit us for a few days. The kids loved the extra attention and people to play with. Nora read lots of books with Grandma.

And Jonah had another teammate for baseball games. They brought Jonah a Ryan Howard Phillies shirt – his favorite player – and he has seriously worn the shirt for a week straight. Here he is giving a signal to Sean, the pitcher.

Then he calls for an intentional walk. Can’t take any chances with this batter. :)

Nora was trying out Jonah’s ball-playing shades.

On Sunday the boys all went to a University of Oregon baseball game, and Jonah got to run the bases at the end.

Then they came home and helped finish up our sandbox project!

No more digging up the lousy play sand in the tiny sand tub – this box has beach sand and plenty of room for both kids and their friends to make all sorts of fun things. Both of them love digging holes and driving trucks around. They also get a kick out of burying Nora’s feet and then poking holes to find her toes again!

And the best part? This is my direct view from the kitchen while I’m making lunches or loading the dishwasher. Ahhhhhh….. so much better than listening to the frantic whining about whether or not lunch is ready yet. ;)

Playing Outside

We’ve been spending a lot more time outdoors lately, which has been really great. While Sean’s family was visiting from Seattle last weekend, we went to the park to play in the big sandbox . Digging in sand has become quite the favorite activity around here.

Awwww… I made them sit together and smile, and it kind of worked.

Jonah was complaining that it was too bright out back. Luckily, I had my pupils dilated last week and got some awesome cardboard sunglasses that Sean taped to his baseball cap.

Grandparent Visit

Grandma and Grandpa flew out to the west coast last week to visit us (and Aunt Lisa, now in Seattle). As seems to be my habit when we have visitors, I hardly took any pictures. The guests are usually taking tons of their own, so I take a little break. Grandma sent me a few of hers to share from the visit. :)

There were a lot of books coming off the shelves. Between Jonah and Nora wanting to be read to, Jonah reading books of his own, and very willing grandparent readers, there was no shortage of stories.

Jonah helped bake pumpkin cookies for everyone. His favorite part is plunking a big chocolate chip in the middle of each one.

The next morning, we walked Jonah to preschool and then came home and ate some cookies for breakfast. :) (shhh… don’t tell him.)

Nora’s just starting to enjoy walking around while holding someone’s hands. Since she’s much happier with her speedy crawling, though, our backs don’t suffer too much.
